PROOFS TO SUBSTANTIATE THAT

`RAF’UL YADAIN`

(RAISING THE HANDS)

SHOULD NOT BE DONE (IN SALAAH)

EXCEPT WHEN COMMENCING (SALAAH)

PROOF NUMBER ONE:

Translation – The Mu’mineen have truly succeeded. (The Mu’mineen are) Those who are humble (sincere, tranquil) in their Salaah.

COMMENTARY:

Translation – Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) states, “By those who are humble and devoted in their Salaah implies those who possess submissiveness and tranquility in their Salaah. They neither look right or left in Salaah nor do they raise their hands.” (Tafseer Ibn Abbaas Page 212)


PROOF NUMBER TWO:

Translation – Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) once said, “Should I not inform you of how Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) performed his Salaah? Hadhrat Alqama (May Allaah Ta’ala have mercy on him) states that Hadhrat Ibn Mas’ood (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) then stood up and raised his hands only the first time (i.e. for Takbeer Tahreemah) and then (for the rest of the Salaah) he did not repeat it.” (Sunan Nasa’i Vol 1 Page 158; Sunan Abu Dawud Vol 1 Page 116)


PROOF NUMBER THREE:

Translation – Hadhrat Baraa’ bin Aazib (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) reports that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would raise his hands upon commencing Salaah. (After that for the remainder of the Salaah) He would not raise his hands again till the observance of Salaam. (Musnad Abu Haneefah (as narrated by Abu Nu’aim) Page 344; Sunan Abu Dawud Vol 1 Page 116)


PROOF NUMBER FOUR:

Translation – Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) narrates that he seen Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) raising his hands upon commencing Salaah. He (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) did not raise his hands upon going for Ruku, upon raising his head from Ruku and even between the two Sajdahs. (Musnad Humaidi Vol 2 Page 277; Musnad Abi Uwaana Vol 1 Page 334)


PROOF NUMBER FIVE:

Translation – Hadhrat Jaabir bin Samura (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) reports that one day Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) entered the Masjid and saw the people observing `Raf’ul Yadain` (raising their hands on several occasions during the Salaah) upon which he remarked, “They have raised their hands like the tails of rebellious horses. Adopt tranquility in your Salaah.” (Saheeh Ibni Hibbaan Vol 3 Page 178; Saheeh Muslim Vol 1 Page 181)


PROOF NUMBER SIX:

Translation – Muhammad bin Amr bin Atwaa (May Allaah Ta’ala have mercy on him) states that he was once seated in the gathering of the Sahabah (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with them) when mention was made of the Salaah of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) (i.e. How would Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) perform his Salaah?). Hadhrat Abu Humaid Saa’idi (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) remarked that he knew better than the rest the manner in which Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) performed his Salaah. When describing the manner in which Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) performed his Salaah he said, “When Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) would commence his Salaah he would raise his hands in line with his shoulders and when he would observe Ruku he would grasp his knees most firmly whilst bending his back. When he would raise his head from Ruku then he would stand straight such that all the joints would return to their respective positions and when he would observe Sajdah then he would leave his hands in their normal position.” (Saheeh Bukhari Vol 1 Page 114; Saheeh Ibni Khuzaima Vol 1 Page 298)

PROOF NUMBER SEVEN:  

Translation – Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) narrates that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “The hands should be raised on seven occasions;

1) When commencing Salaah            
2) By the Baytullah (Ka’bah)

3) On Safaa                                          
4) On Marwaa

5) In Arafaat                                          
6) In Muzdalifah

7) By the Jamaraat                                

(Sunan Tahaawi Vol 1 Page 416)


PROOF NUMBER EIGHT:

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) narrates that he performed Salaah with Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) and Hadhrat Umar (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) and each of them only raised their hands when reciting Takbeer Tahreemah (upon commencing Salaah). (Kitaabul Mu’jam, Vol 2 Page 692; Sunan Kubraa (Imaam Baihaqi) Vol 2 Page 79)  


PROOF NUMBER NINE:

Translation – Hadhrat Ali Murtadha (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) would raise his hands upon commencing Salaah (Takbeer Tahreemah) and he would not do so at any other time during the rest of the Salaah. (Al Mudawwanut ul Kubra Vol 1 Page 71; Musnad Zaid bin Ali Page 100)


PROOF NUMBER TEN:

Translation – The famous Taabi’ee, Hadhrat Mujaahid (May Allaah Ta’ala have mercy on him) states that he did not see Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (May Allaah Ta’ala be pleased with him) raise his hands except when commencing his Salaah. (Musannaf Ibni Abi Shaybah Vol 1 Page 268)
